In The Beginning
John & Mamie Larkin, the original founders began this West Alabama Funeral Business in 1907. Mr. John Larkin was a tailor and saw the need for burial of deceased individuals. With the help of local people, he began the business. Their daughter, Valtena Larkin was born in 1905. She later matriculated her education at Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Alabama and Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama serving as a teacher in Marengo County, Alabama until her retirement. Her son, John Dustin Scott later would enter into the business.
John Dustin Scott, the son of Valtina Larkin Scott, would later enter into the business. He attended Clark College, Atlanta, Georgia and Atlanta College of Mortuary Service, Atlanta, Georgia. John D. Scott returned home to join his grandfather in the business.
John D. Scott returned home to join his grandfather, the original founder, in the business. Upon the death of John D. Scott on April 23, 1968, Thomas Lee Scott, the brother of John D. Scott and the son of Valtena Larkin Scott joined the firm. He later became a licensed funeral director and embalmer. Valtena Larkin Scott served as Chaplain and musician for the Alabama Funeral Directors and Morticians Association. She later became "Woman of the Year" for the National Funeral Directors and Morticians Associations in 1982 along with Juanita Sellers Stone of Sellers Funeral Home, Atlanta, Georgia and Clara Ivey Wilson of Ivey Brothers Funeral Directors of Atlanta, Georgia.
Upon the death of Mrs. Valtena Larkin Scott on April 9, 1985, her grandson, Christopher C. Scott relocated from Atlanta, Georgia, to join his father, Thomas L. Scott. Thomas L. Scott served as manager and head of operations until his demise on October 15, 1996. Thomas L. Scott's son Christopher, who served as the first African-American Instructor & Professor at the largest Mortuary science college as a Professor of Mortuary Science, Pathology, Anatomy, Embalming, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry and Restorative Art, began managing the firm . Christopher Scott became President and C.E.O of Larkin and Scott Funeral Home. His mother, Dorothy Scott also became a licensed funeral director along with his wife, Johnnie W. Scott.

Mrs. Valtena Larkin Scott chose Christopher, as a young man (fourth generation) to one day take over and succeed in providing a tradition of long lasting professional service to families of West Alabama. The legacy continued with the fourth generation embracing and continuing the tradition of professional, dignified funeral care. Christopher Scott, General Manager and C.E.O. passed on May 21, 2013.
The fifth generation continues the tradition of sympathetic courteous and dignified care. Kelvin A. Scott , son of Thomas V. Scott recently completed his studies in Mortuary Science at East Mississippi Community College. John Thomas Scott, son of Christopher C. and Johnnie W. Scott is a 2012 graduate of the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. John received his degree in Commerce and Business Administration. May 2015, he graduated with a degree in Mortuary Science- Funeral Services Technology East Mississippi Community College. In August 2015,the National Board Examinations were successfully passed.
