Mr. William D. Rankin's Obituary
Mr. William Dickason Rankin of Faunsdale, Alabama entered into eternal rest December 17,2021 at his residence. Graveside services for Mr. William Dickason Rankin were held Tuesday, December 21,2021 at 11 a.m. from St. Michael's Episcopal Church Faunsdale, Alabama.
William was born in Alfalfa, AL, on January 18, 1935. He was the youngest of Amzi Godden and Susetta Lipsey Legg Rankin. His formative years also were heavily influenced by Bill Mac k Johnson. He graduated from Marengo County High School in Thomaston, and then went on to Auburn University where he received his degree in Agronomy & Soils. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity an d also was the undefeated heavyweight wrestling champion his senior year. He loved Auburn. William later was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for his wrestling career. He was the wrestling coach for Marengo Academy and led the team to two state championships and always said his coaching years and time with his wrestlers were the best ten years of his life.
He was commissioned into the army through ROTC as a Second Lieutenant and was proud to serve his country . H e came back to work with his brothers at Cedarcrest Farms and continued a life-long love of the land. William received several honors for his work in soil conservation, and he had a passion for improvi ng the land. He also was a board member for Black Warrior Electric Co-op in Demopolis. He was known for cooking breakfast each morning for anyone who happened to be in his home and was famous for hi s "Pop Eggs" and Christmas peanut brittle. William was a generous giver, and he believed in the benefits of hard work and often said that trials build character. He was an elder at Faunsdale Presby terian Church, and his faith in the Lord was as strong as his love for his family. He loved people, and he loved telling stories. He was known for his quick whit and simple, wise sayings.
He is pre ceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Lucile Lucas Coleman Rankin, three brothers, a sister, and his grandson Misha Curtis Allen. He is survived by his five daughters, Elizabeth Rankin Allen (Curtis) of Faunsdale, Rebecca Rankin Osterkamp (Oie) of Raleigh, NC, Margaret Rankin Byrd (Bobby) of Faunsdale, Annie Coleman Rankin Williams (Brycen) of Auburn, and Coleman Rankin Krusmark (Kurt) of Faunsdale, as well eight grandchildren, Suzanne Allen Schmidt (Larry), Aileen Allen Litwiller (Eric), Anne Curtis Allen Dirks (Adrian), Oren Isaac Osterkamp, William Rankin Williams, Ella Elizabeth Williams, Shepard Woodson Krusmark, and Ro bert Godden Krusmark. He also is survived by seven great grandchildren: Kara Michelle Schmidt, Alicia Katherine Schmidt, Adeline Grace Schmidt, Amzi Jon Litwiler, Daniel Grant Litwiler, Amos William L itwiler and Baby Dirks on the way.
William's family would especially like to express sincere gratitude to Coleman & Kurt Krusmark for granting his wishes to be in his home as well as those who supported his family in their care for him: Ida Ravizee, Thomasene Waters, Rodney Raby, Marion Sewell, & Valrie Cade as well as Comfort Care Hospice.
