Mr. John Henry Harris, age 63 of Columbia, South Carolina, a former native of Jefferson, Alabama and Nyack, New York passed April 13, 2008 in Columbia, South Carolina. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Small Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, Jefferson, Alabama. Rev. Lawrence Wofford officiated. Interment followed in Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, Alabama. Larkin & Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis, Alabama entrusted with arrangements. Most often referred to as "Bud". He was born in Jefferson, Alabama to the parentage of the late Joseph "Gullie" and Lucinda "Sindy" Willis-Harris. He was the 11th of 15 children born to their union. He was predeceased by his parents, Gullie and Sindy Harris and siblings, Mary Louise Whitfield-Koonce, Mary Dell Adams, Darby Harris and Inez Watson. Bud was educated in the Marengo County School District. After he relocated to Nyack, New York where he met Alice Dickerson in 1966. They had two sons and two daughters born through their union. He was employed at American Brake Shoe, Bushed Boak Allen and Arco Management until retirement in 1966. He was a founding emmeber of the Alabama Club of Nyack, NY. Bud and Alice raised over 30 foster children, 7 of which he and Alice adopted, just because it was the right thing to do. He leaves to cherish his precious memories a loving wife of 42 years, Alice Harris of Columbia, S.C.; his children, John Henry Harris, Jr. (Lynn) of Nyack, NY, Desiree Bartley (Tony) of Nyack, NY, Nicole Harris of Columbia, S.C., Jermaine Harris (Michelle) of Columbia, S.C, Jermaine Harris (Michelle) of Columbia, S.C., Johnny Baez, Alonzo Powell, Rashad Harris, Hakim Harris, Tiffany Harris, Chyna Harris and April Harris, all of Columbia, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; His siblings, Lottie Williams & Annie Lee Harris of Demopolis, AL, Peter Harris of Tuskegee, AL, Dillie Pritchett of Birmingham, AL, Johnnie Harris, Sr. (Mary) Of Pine Bush, NY, Joseph (Gullie) Harris, Jr of Nyack, NY, Lucinda Watson of Spring Valley, NY, Christine Ray-Charles (Anthony) of Spring Valley, NY, Emanuel Harris (Creola) of Spring Valley, NY, and Cleo Harris (Carol) of Cleveland, OH; Brothers-in-law, Robert Ford and Bernard MInor of New York, Edward Minor of Virginia, Sisters-in-law, Yvette Dickerson of Spring Valley, NY and Roberta Ford of Tuskegee, AL; two goddaughters, Kristen Bell of Spring Valley, NY and Jennifer Carrion of New York. He also leaves hundreds of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends of Alabama and Rockland County, NY, with all he had special relationships.
