Mr. David Scales, age 91 of Coatopa, Alabama passed April 17, 2007 at Huntsville Hospital, Huntsville, Alabama. Funeral Services were held Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. at the Dugg Hill Primitive Baptist Church, Coatopa, Alabama. Rev. John Wright officiated. Interment followed in the adjoining cemetery. Larkin & Scott Funeral Directors of Demopolis, Alabama entrusted with arrangements. Born in Coatopa, Alabama (Sumter County). Joined the Zion Hill A.M.E. Church at an early age. He was a Master Mason of Zion Hill Lodge # 212A where he served as secretary. Active patron of Zion Hill Beauty Lodge Order of Eastern Star Number 753. Inducted into U.S. Armny in the 703rd Medical Group Unite in Norfolk, VA and later stationed in New Brunswick, N.J. He married his sweetheart, Merendy Williams and they were married for over 65 years. David worked as a Vocational Agriculture Aide with the Sumter County Farm Agent and USDA Farm Administration. David was also a farmer and serious bird hunter. He was active in the Civil Rights movement mobilizing individuals to vote. Also he was instrumental along with Mrs. Daisy Carter of Coatopa, Alabama in developing a central place to go and relax and play organized sports. When his health failed, his wife preceded him in death. Before his wife death, they both relocated to Huntsville, Alabama to reside with his niece, friend and caretaker, Emma Howard & Hugh Stewart. Survivors include a host of nieces, nephews, great, great-great nieces & nephews, cousins and devoted niece, Emma Howard & Hugh Stewart of Huntsville, Alabama. Special great-great nephew, Terriorn "Harry Lee" Stewart and a host of other relatives and friends.
